AGROFORESTRY PRACTICES

Windbreak
Windbreaks are mainly some rows of trees planted with the purpose of controlling wind speed in order to protect crops, livestock or livestock production building and increase crops yields. Other benefits that can be induces by the implementation of windbreak are the reduction of wind erosion, improved crop yield, reduced heating cost, the control of snow accumulation either for reduction of snow removal cost or for crop protection. It is also possible to produce high value timber products and edible crops from those systems that represent a source of income for the farm.

Forested Riparian Buffer
Riparian buffer is a best management practice that has as main goal the protection of the environment, notably the water courses. The presence of a crop free space next to the water course will act as a filter for nonpoint source of pollution that might come from the fields. The shade created from the trees contributes to maintain a low temperature in the water and a high oxygen level. The presence of the trees also improve aquatic habitat. In some cases, the riparian buffer can also act as a windbreak and it is also possible to produce high value timber as well as edible products from those systems.

Sylvopasture
It's a practice that combines low density tree plantation, livestock and forage to create an improved environment for each component of the system. Inside these production systems, the livestock benefits of a shelter from the trees as well as shade on hot sunny days. Studies have proven an increase weight gain from the livestock under those production systems. The trees on their side are planted in an environment that will make them grow a lot faster than they would in the forest. If the system is properly managed, it will be much more productive than having the trees and the pasture growing separately.

Intercropping
It is a low density tree plantation with a crop rotation growing between the rows of trees. When properly planned and managed this production system is highly productive and it can provide a good yield of crop as well. It is possible to produce some very high value timber products as well as a good cash crop and other edible products.

Biomass Plantation
The biomass production is a plantation of fast growing woody species that is harvested for energy production. This production system can be used to get some income from marginal lands or in order to diversify or adding something to the usual farm incomes.

Deer Food Plots
The food plots are some small parcel planted with specialy developped deer attractant and nutritive forrage. That practice is use for the quality deer management. More often it is use to increase the population of deer on a specific territory but it also provide a better quality in terms of deer herd. At the farm level, we can easily conceive that planting few acres of food plots would allow the producer to rent his land for hunting and diversify the incomes of the farm. On different farms it is possible to observe some problems of crops eaten by deer. By planting a food plot, which is more attractive and nutritive, the deers would stop going into the cash crop. The quality deer management is a practice promoted by the Quality deer management association (QDMA) . Those practices are only starting in New Brunswick but have been used for many decades in other parts of North America. Planting food plots would mostly be interesting for hunters fanatics and for the outfitters and guides.

Non-Timber Forest products (NTFP)
While your trees are growing, there might be some interesting growing conditions in the understory of your forest for NTFP production. There are a lot of possibilities depending on the various conditions present on your woodland. It is possible to produce different edible, pharmaceutical and ornamental products. The production of those crops in the forest can represent an interesting source of income on your woodlot.
